From Silver Boom to Ski Legend
Aspen's identity is deeply intertwined with both silver and snow. The town was a bustling silver mining hub in the late 1800s. After the silver crash, the town entered a "quiet period," but its destiny changed in the 1930s when European ski pioneers and veterans of the 10th Mountain Division discovered the massive ski potential of Aspen Mountain (known locally as Ajax).
1937: The first official ski trail was marked on Aspen Mountain.
1946: The Aspen Skiing Corporation was founded, and the famous Lift 1—the longest chairlift in the world at the time—was installed, officially opening Aspen Mountain to recreational skiing.
1950: Aspen hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the first held outside of Europe, cementing its status as a world-class destination that flawlessly merges culture, commerce, and alpine sports.
