The Heart of American Skiing
Vail is unique because it was meticulously planned and designed specifically to be a world-class ski resort. It was founded by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton. Seibert, a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, discovered the mountain's potential during the 1950s. The resort officially opened on December 15, 1962.
Vail's design, inspired by Austrian villages, features interconnected villages (Vail Village and Lionshead) designed to be completely pedestrian-friendly. The opening of the vast Back Bowls cemented Vail's reputation as a sprawling, expert-level destination unmatched in North America.
