Five Peaks and Gold Rush Grit

The history of Breckenridge is a fascinating blend of Gold Rush grit and modern alpine recreation. The town was founded in 1859 after the discovery of gold along the Blue River, establishing it as a genuine, hardscrabble mining settlement. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it sustained itself through cycles of mining for gold, silver, and other minerals, resulting in the preservation of its distinctive Victorian-era architecture that forms one of Colorado's largest historic districts today.

After the mining era eventually waned, the town's destiny was successfully revived in 1961 with the opening of the Breckenridge Ski Area on Peak 8. This successful transition allowed the town to maintain its authentic historical character while evolving into the large, modern resort celebrated today for its sprawling, high-alpine terrain across Five Peaks.
